Fall arrest anchors give a safety net to employees that are working in very hazardous conditions. While everyone would like to think they are sure footed, falling deaths and injuries happen every year that can be prevented by having the right equipment in place. The benefits are realized through saved lives and cost savings.

Legal requirements are often set through laws passed by federal and state government bodies. The nuance of the laws are usually general in the style of equipment, but specific in the function. For instance, OSHA requires a certain pound strength be provided in order to make sure that an employee that loses his or her footing is safely caught without serious injury.

Using the proper roof anchors, death can be prevented. Many people work in positions that require them to be dangled over open air. Window washing equipment for skyscrapers is literally lowered down along the side of the building with no safety net. An employee attached to a fall arrest anchor may sustain discomfort, but will be able to see another day.

Without the right type of equipment, serious injuries can occur. If a person falls from the top of a building and the cable does not catch them for over twenty feet before they stop short, they can experience broken ribs or worse. The type of system should allow the fall to be arrested. In other words, it should slow the fall, rather than stopping it immediately. By slowing the descent, the injuries are minimized.

Saving money by passing on safety is more expensive in the end. In most building codes, roof anchors are required for certain structures. If it is not installed, the liability increases. Other losses include workman's compensation claim, lost productivity, and other benefits that have to be paid to an injured or deceased employee's family.

The designs vary based on the need and circumstances. Most are permanently attached to the buildings roof structure. There are other types that are more temporary in nature. The flat portable style is heavy and has a rubber friction footing that prevents it from moving as long as it is placed on the appropriate slope. The rig style is able to be rolled into position, the wheels retracted, and up to two employees connected via safety harness. This provides convenience in situations where permanent attachment may not be available.

The devices are usually able to handle the weight of multiple workers. Because the majority of situations call for more than one employee to be working on a structure at a time, it is important that the equipment be able to handle the additional stress. In the case of window washing equipment, the equipment as well as workers have to be supported by the roof anchors.

Roof Anchors give employees the needed protection when they are working in high hazardous positions. For the advantages to be available, these devices have to be installed or put in place prior to the start of the job. Doing nothing is one of the most costly situations available.
